Do you have questions for Carolina Farmhouse?

Well...here's your chance to ask.  I wrote a blog a couple of days ago HERE about the attorney that is working with Carolina Farmhouse that you can reach out to.

I am working with John (the attorney) to gather your questions to be answered by him.  He has asked me to trust him (a big thing with me right now..and he realizes that's a lot to ask for)....  He said he is willing to build that trust and that is by creating open communication and willing to answer questions openly and honestly.  Keep in mind that there are some questions that may not be able to be answered, and if not I am certain John will try his best to give you a reason why.

So...  If you have any questions (and don't be shy...ask the hard ones) you'd like to have answered, you can either email me at lfern74@gmail.com or you can leave them in the comment section.  I will compile them and send them to John.

Once we have a good list of questions (I've sent some to him already from myself and others), I will do a FAQ blog post.

We are hoping that this will give everyone some answers to the questions that haven't been answered.  And, a chance for you to get a better understanding.

I look forward to hearing from you!

A little information - Carolina Farmhouse (Attorney Info)

First & foremost let me make it clear that the reason I started writing on my blog about Carolina Farmhouse was for informational & educational purposes only.  I never wanted to turn my blog into a place to rant about this mess.

As a matter of fact it took a lot for me to write about it and I tossed it around for many days before I did.  But, as time went on and we were having more & more issues I came here to write about our experiences. And, yes it happens to be a pretty big part of our journey.  So it is just that - our opinion and experience that we (The Ferns) have endured.  As time went by I started having more & more people either comment or send me an email about what they were/are going through.  I had spent a ton of my time, time that I don't get paid for nor can I get that time back, doing research on what our (meaning my husband & I) options were.  We are customers shouldn't we have some sort of protection too and a right to share our experience with others!?!  I wasn't getting any responses from Carolina Farmhouse regarding delivery.  And, it wasn't until we went to someone higher up (filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau) to get them to see we were seriously concerned.

The more of Carolina Farmhouse customers that came to me asking what were we doing, what could they do, was there anything that could be done.  Let me tell ya folks there are lots of people out there mad, angry, hurt, upset and simply devastated that they trusted Sam & Kelly Utt-Grubb with their money and to have a product delivered.

So I put together the information I had with were to file a complaint, who to call, etc.  I also said if you are going through this situation to contact me.  The reason behind that was so I could pass along the information via email because some of the customers wanted to remain private.  I've already spent my precious time gathering so why not save someone else the time and some of the frustration.  There were many people that didn't know that they could file a complaint through the Attorney General's office.

Am I passionate about this?  So to speak - yes!  Why?  I feel awful and sad for those that are going through this as well....  I believe in helping others and you know honestly I went to bed many nights sick to my stomach.  I have lost sleep over knowing I had been so nice, patient and cheered on this company, and to think that they have my money knowing that we had lost everything prior...many conversations was about our gratefulness that they were giving back to not only us but to others...my heart falls to the pit of my stomach.  I don't get it, I don't understand nor can I wrap my head or heart around understanding why or how.  I don't want to lose faith in people or small businesses.  And, I don't believe I am alone in feeling a range of emotions.  Not many people have the money to just go buy another table or bedroom set that they've already paid in full for.  I also believe that the tone some of us were receiving when just simply trying to get answers made us all a little more edgy about the entire ordeal.  I certainly believe in the way you treat others is the way you will be treated in return.  I am also certain that had things been more upfront & honest you'd see a lot less negativity floating around....of course this is all my opinion and how I view mine & my husbands situation.  So am I passionate about this...most definitely.

The bottom line is we just want our money back ASAP so we can just move on.  I am tired of wasting any more of my time on Carolina Farmhouse.  It is something I want to be completely done with!

CAROLINA FARMHOUSE...Attorney Update

On a positive note they are working with an attorney that I am sincerely hoping is here to help straighten this out.  I had a lengthy conversation with him last week, and he is willing to talk to those that are going through any of this.  He gave me permission to provide his email address here.  John Szymankiewicz john@jslawcenter.com

I am no longer working with or conversing with anyone at Carolina Farmhouse.  I am directing all of my questions and inquiries directly to Mr.  Szymankiewicz.

If you feel you need to have any questions answered regarding your situation, please contact Mr. Szymankiewicz.  He was a pleasure to speak with, and he answered all of the questions I had.

I hope this information helps.

Fascinated by all the stories... Carolina Farmhouse!

I find it interesting that a customer that came to Carolina Farmhouse a mere short time after they opened (within a couple of months) and experienced the issues that some of us are experiencing because of the “growth spurt”.  And, even back then the furniture was flawed!!  You know what else I find fascinating?   That Kelly Utt-Grubb offered up a piece of furniture to the same customer to write a good review for them on Houzz.com, asking the customer to do several things for a piece of their furniture.  So, how many good reviews & hundreds of happy customers do you really have, or did they simply receive a piece of furniture in trade?

I have been contacted by Carolina Farmhouse saying they want to issue us a store credit.  Funny! How can you issue you us a store credit when you haven’t even started the furniture we originally ordered?  Just doesn’t really make sense to me honestly!  What good does a store credit do for me?  So I sit and wait another 6 months when I can have my table from another furniture maker in 2 - 3 weeks?
Another Carolina Farmhouse customer and I were in contact. The day after we were offered the store credit, they too were offered store credit.  They had originally been told they would be getting a refund, and now all of sudden Carolina Farmhouse changed their mind.  Why did they all of sudden re-engage with the customer. This customers story goes back more than a year.
This is the reason we need to keep getting the story out there.  This has been going on longer than the “6 months ago, when we had a sudden growth spurt”.  Had I read the complaints, I wouldn’t be here today.  I tend to believe there are many people out there that would say the same.

According to Kelly Utt-Grubb blog post on March 27, she stated that they’ve had bad press, Yelp's flawed review filter system, and an analysis of Better Business Bureau policies that result in misleading grades and reports.  You said “check out the twisted hit piece Monica Laliberte and Jenn Sorber Smith of WRAL did on us”.  Far from twisted…I am sitting here in the same situation!  I say if both of YELP and BBB alone are skewed, flawed or misleading grades…then I am living in some fantasy world.  See we are a part of both of those and our story is accurate – I have email back up proof.  Furthermore, every person that I have been in contact with…their stories are similar to ours.
Kelly Utt-Grubb also stated “We're not going out of business.  We're not going away.  We're not hiding, because we have nothing to hide.  And we won't tolerate disrespectful treatment, no matter the circumstances.  If our business is not the right choice for you for whatever reason, then by all means, move along.  We have beautiful, sturdy, handcrafted products that have made a lot of customers very happy. ”  Not going out of business… Not hiding?  Then why are so many emails/phone calls go unresponsive.  You won’t tolerate disrespectful treatment?  But, you don’t mind treating others in that manner.  Arrogance, hateful, and bullying have all been terms to describe the treatment people have felt.

“If our business is not the right choice for you for whatever reason, then by all means, move along.”  We are all trying to move along, but you have our money that we all worked hard for that you don’t seem to think you should have to give back despite the fact that you haven’t provided the things we’ve paid for.  Plus there are several customers that received furniture that is poor quality (warped boards, rough tops, uneven color, wrong size), promised pieces for customers trouble that were never received.

“We have beautiful, sturdy, handcrafted products that have made a lot of customers very happy. “  Based on people that I’ve been in contact with, the ones that did receive their furniture have received poor, unsightly furniture. Oh and let's not forget that Kelly Utt-Grubb tried to get someone to post a good review in return for a piece of furniture.

I have said it before…  There are a ton of people out there afraid to stand up & speak up.  WHY?  Well according to a few customers they were bullied & intimidated.   I have an email from a customer (actually he also posted a comment on my blog) that he & his wife were bullied by Carolina Farmhouse.  So, then they threatened with a lawsuit against this customer.

So – my question is…  Are you still not going anywhere?  Are you not going out of business?  Why is it so hard for you to just simply write us a check if you have our money?  Where did our money go & what did you do with it?

Keep the stories coming customers of Carolina Farmhouse.  Keep filing with the Attorney General’s office, keep filing complaints with the BBB, and keep up with posting your reviews.

Fight for what belongs to you.

Another victim of Carolina Farmhouse

I have another post I am working on with some of my thrift finds and a project I completed for those that follow my blog for other things...Sorry guys..

But, I need to help to get the word out.  We are still working on trying to recover our money from Carolina Farmhouse.  I am getting lots of feedback & emails that are coming in from others that have been a victim of Carolina Farmhouse.

Another one... Paid in full by debit last September, still no furniture nor have they received a refund.  It has been 9 months.  And, because like us they paid by debit there is no way to do a chargeback.

Here is the information I have provided & I hope this helps.

The most important is to file with Attorney General's office and Better Business Bureau.  Also with the Fair Trade Commission.  They changed their website to say lead time is 6 - 8 months.  If they gave you an estimated delivery time & didn't meet it prior, then file with the FTC.  There is a mail/phone order law that states that if they don't meet the first estimated delivery time then they are to provide you another date or a prompt refund based on what you want to do.  So, file with the FTC as well with your info (dates, and anything they would need).

When filing a complaint with the BBB it is a permanent public record.

Also, send anyone you know to my blog links.  We need to get everyone possible to file with the FTC, Attorney General & BBB.

Another thing is to call the police department in Cary, NC.  They said there is nothing they can do because there isn't any fraud being committed, but the more that call the more they will be watching them.  (919) 469-4012..

Send emails to both Durham, NC Chamber of Commerce & Cary, NC Chamber of Commerce.  I say Durham because Kelly is connected with them via LinkedIn.  info@durhamchamber.org and info@carychamber.com

Also, write to Entrepreneur Magazine and let them know that you are another one of their victims.   entmag@entrepreneur.com

Also, send an email to Monica Laliberte at WRAL.   laliberte@wral.com  They are the ones that did the initial story on Carolina Farmhouse.

Get your story out there to as many places as possible.  Go to your local news stations and send them an email.

I hope this helps, and if you are reading this and have any additional information please let me know.

Moving Forward...One step at a time. Carolina Farmhouse

I know I've said it before.  This blog was started for me to document our journey and so as hard as it was to go through the daily living from the fire, there are still things that we are going through and therefore will continue to write about.  I will always have furniture, DIY and projects that I will feature here as well, and I am hoping that soon I will be able to turn this into a blog full of those features.

Yesterday was a tough day for me.  I guess when you realize you’ve been screwed over & certain things are confirmed it stings a bit.

I feel better today and I am not as angry.  I feel a little deflated, but I believe that is normal.  We aren’t the only ones & as much as I hate that anyone is going through this..it is a little comforting to know that I have company sitting on this couch with me and it’s not a pity party for one J

I also know that if I want something done I need to stay on top of things with the Attorney General’s office, and the other outlets, and then take whatever next steps there are to take. We originally worked hard for that money and I won't go down without a fight...I've had enough taken from me recently so I take offense to it being taken.

I’ve had some very kind words & advice given and I truly appreciate each & every single one of them.  With that being said, I will continue to provide updates and if you don’t feel like you want to read them I understand.  But, I’ve had a ton of people email & ask to keep updating.  I am doing this only to get the word out.  There is a lot of us that have lost a significant amount of money to Carolina Farmhouse.  And, while I know that my husband & I have worked hard to have what we have I think it is my right to fight back for our hard earned money.

The information that was passed along to us from a local includes such things as Carolina Farmhouse people (owners, etc) going on multiple vacations over the last year, new vehicles, and such.  Now I have no qualms with vacations, but when you have blasted us with “we have had a growth spurt and we’ve had a production delay causes by so many orders” and knowing that my furniture hasn’t been started, and the the fact that you say you can’t refund us our money…this then creates an issue for me.  Multiple people at multiple times have been told by Carolina Farmhouse that they have spent long hard hours working and sacrificing spending time with their children in order to get orders completed.

Once the Attorney General’s office contacted them & explained the FTC mail/telephone order law, they then changed their website to show a 6-8 month lead time.  That’s a long time to wait.  But, I am glad they did, that at least gives any new customers a more accurate time..

We had ordered the table listed here on Craigslist by Carolina Farmhouse as our Farmhouse Family program back in October.  Seeing this made me want to cry!  Our table hasn’t been built or started, yet they are advertising the exact table in April for sale.  Why not just offer this one to us.  For crying outloud…it was a free table you were giving us…we would have been happy!

I have moved on with the island in our kitchen.  I found a great fit as I’ve previously wrote in my blogs about.  I truly feel karma was on my side.  It is exactly what we were looking for, it is something I was able to refinish & the price was unbeatable.  I got such a great deal that man it made me feel excellent!!

I have started the hunt for the dining table and I have found several, but I think today I found a winner.  I spoke the gentleman and geez you just can’t find nicer people.  He’s fairly close so we can actually go pick it up when he has it finished.  And….the best part is  the lead time… THREE WEEKS not 6 months! He uses reclaimed wood & that is exactly what we want.  Go green!  Three weeks guys…seriously this just made my heart swell!  o based off his website & photos…his furniture is truly a work of art.  I am hoping to get to move forward as soon as possible…my husband is tad hesitant with all the mess going on with Carolina Farmhouse…and the fact that who knows how long it will take to recover our money!

I have to continue to remind myself that it is going to all work out…maybe not in my timeframe, but eventually as my daddy always says – the truth always prevails.  I believe that good things come to good people.  I have to be patient & just continue to hold onto my faith & beliefs.  I just big problems with someone taking from others and lying.

I do have some projects that I’ve been working on to show…this mess has just taken up some precious time.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend… We have lots going on around here this weekend.
Much LOVE, PEACE & HAPPINESS

Stealing? Carolina Farmhouse update...

I’m providing an update to our ongoing drama with Carolina Farmhouse.
We work very hard for everything that we have/own.  My husband does an outstanding job running the business we own.  He works hard to ensure that he maintains good business relationships with his clients/customers.  He does whatever it takes & that sometimes means making sacrifices along the way when it comes to any family happenings, whether that means illness, new births, ailing parents, or just everyday living.  Hey we get it...we had a house fire & exactly a week to the day after my mom had a heart attack.  I could give you a long list of hits we took all at once during the fire, but I won't.  It is life and we kept going because we knew we had a family to provide for.  But, in return my husband provides more than adequately for his family, and makes sure that when he can & does have the time we do fun things as a family.

There have been times in which a client has felt that there was an issue.  Or there are times where we have the threat of losing a client.  Sometimes it is in the best interest to let the client go, but sometimes it is worth fighting to retain that client.  This is our  means to live life.  When my husband provides a service he is expected to get paid, and when a client pays for a service upfront they expect to receive the service in which they paid for without having to beg, plead or fight for that service.  If my husband doesn't provide that service then in essence that is stealing the money of the client.

I feel as though our hard working money (and the money that we received from losing everything in our fire) has in essence been stolen.  We, in good faith, paid for a product 6 months ago with the understanding that it takes 10 - 16 weeks for completion.  We have now been told by Sam Utt- Grubb that they can't provide a refund to us and that we can wait until our furniture is built.  This means that our money has been used to pay for their living (whether that be a mortgage payment on their almost 3000 sq foot home, groceries, having fun with their family, etc) while we still sit and wait!  That in my mind is stealing....you led us to believe that when we paid in full upfront that we would be receiving our furniture with a completion date of February 2013.

We are still requesting a full refund, and we are entitled to that refund.  It is far past the estimated completion date.  If we don't receive our refund then Carolina Farmhouse is a thief and instead of providing us the free table as they promised, they've stolen from us.

I have tried with all my being to stay as nice as I can, but you know what I am angry.  Carolina Farmhouse has willingly taken our money....money that we worked extremely hard for!  We never signed up to wait over 6 months for furniture that we could've gone anywhere else and had 6 months ago.

Since my last blog post in response to Kelly Utt-Grubb comment, we’ve continued to request a full refund from Carolina Farmhouse.  WE were told back on February 9 by Dan Utt that once they receive the part in to fix the equipment that our furniture would be finished and out for delivery.  So, now my question is were you lying to me as well?

I got an email from co-owner Sam Utt-Grubb last night after he told me on April 18 that they no longer wanted to do business with us, that they are not able to refund our money but we could wait for our furniture to be built.  Our furniture was/has never been started and ready to be out for delivery in February.  Again, my question is did Dan lie to me in his February 9 email??  I particularly chose Carolina Farmhouse based on a few reasons.  The reasons – I liked the furniture, they are a certified green company, and they like to give back to families (this was prior to our fire).  I had emailed Dan in May 2012 that these are the reasons I was interested in doing business with Carolina Farmhouse...our fire was in June 2012.  It was reassuring that a company that was benefiting & thriving was giving back to the community.  Of course now I question their motives!

I had originally said in my first post that I would never say not to buy furniture from Carolina Farmhouse.  But, I take back that statement and here is why.  Not to mention if this was a national chain store that I was reviewing, I would not hesitate to give my honest opinion if I'd buy from them again.
See above about taking our money :(

We have constantly been given the run around, and we paid in good faith for a product to be delivered within a timely manner based on the communication between myself & Dan prior to me paying in full.  We were made July Farmhouse Family and Carolina Farmhouse took it back because I had to file a rightful complaint to get my voice heard.  It has now been 6 months and now I know our furniture was never started!

More reasons – unprofessional & unethical manners in conducting business with customers.  They push the Farmhouse Families & Thanksforward programs... “GIVING” back, but yet they have actually taken more than they have given to their customers.  And, I say this because who wants to wait on furniture to be built for 6 plus months when you can get the same hand crafted furniture from other places that is just as nice and have it within 6-8 weeks?  Plus waiting 6-8 months (and longer for some) without being told it is going to be that long, we were told 10-16 weeks.  They willingly took my money…and still have it!
Lack of communication!  My husband is a sole employee and he has never let a client wait to hear from him for longer than 24 hours.  Communication is a key component & letting customers hang with no real answers has created doubt & trust issues!!

I’ve had a Carolina Farmhouse customer reach out to me from reading my blogs.  They are & continue to be going through dealing with Carolina Farmhouse for over a year now.  I am completely flabbergasted at the email exchange and the audacity that someone who is running a business would treat & speak to a customer the way Kelly Utt-Grubb spoke to Erika.

They have had issues with everything from delivery, refund issues to poor quality furniture.  The dining table was a rough finish to the point that their children didn’t even want to eat at the table.

The latest is during our exchange, she let me know that after everything they have been going through, Sam Utt-Grubb was coming today to pick up the buffet table they had built for them.  There were issues with the buffet table – one leg was shorter than the other 3, handles were wrong, and the sides of the drawer panels had not been stained not to include the color was uneven.

Want to know what happened to the buffet after he picked it up?  It was posted for sale within a couple of hours on Facebook.  Want to know for how much?  $950.00.  Want to know how much Erika paid for it?  $821.  And, they posted on Facebook that at $950 this $600 off retail price.  I find that to be greedy.  You have now posted a USED piece of furniture for sale for more than you originally sold it for!

While Erika and her husband have received a portion their money back, it’s a far from what they paid them originally.  Erika & her husband are still working to get the remaining portion back.

I know there are a lot of other people out there that are going through what we are going through.  Another customer wrote into Entrepreneur in response to the Doing Good publication in February 2013.  The customer also expressed unsatisfactory experience.  Entrepreneur followed up with Kelly Utt-Grubb and she admitted to them that the current delays are unacceptable.  I find that interesting being that every exchange I’ve had with any of them has not once said they were wrong.  She then said they were working to issue refunds to customers that have experienced unsatisfactory delays.  I again will say how interesting because we were told as of last night they couldn’t refund our money!

How many more customers are out there that are going through this?  How many are afraid to speak up/out? If you are out there and are going through or have gone through this with Carolina Farmhouse, please contact me.

The need to stand up for ourselves... Carolina Farmhouse

Frustration.  My husband & I have been discussing if I should or shouldn't write this post.  You see I now have been called out by Carolina Farmhouse.  Please see the below that the co-owner had written as a comment on my blog post.  My comments & response is in RED.  Please know that I would never feel the need to respond to this, but we feel that if we are going to be called out then we have a right to “stand up for ourselves” as Kelly explained in her blog that they were doing with all of the bad press about them.

Hi Lynn,

I'm sorry to see that you've chosen to discuss this matter publicly, but I do understand your feelings about this being part of your journey since your house fire.   I did write about this because it is a part of our journey..we've been through a lot over the last year.

Over the past six-months, we have experienced a sudden increase in demand for our products that we had not expected or predicted.  We were not told about the sudden increase in the demand that would impact our furniture being delayed.  We have done our utmost to ensure as little a delay as possible to our customers, and we have taken a number of steps to streamline production as we learn and grow. I want to sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. I know you were very excited to receive furniture from us, and I hate that things have not worked out as we all had hoped.  Your apology is accepted, however we were never communicated to that there was production growth 6 months ago (which is when we placed our order) that would impact a delay.  On our invoice it says February 2013 completion (that is approximately 14 – 16 weeks lead time..depending on what week you deliver).

I am, however, disappointed to see you repeatedly (to the BBB and here) stating that you hadn't heard from us for months.  I hadn’t heard from anyone from October 26, 2012 when I paid for our items until February 9 after I had sent an email asking about delivery.  I had actually sent an email on January 23 asking about our status & that we’d be moving in mid-February.  So actually that is months.  In that email from Dan dated February 9, it was that a piece of equipment fail  and things would be delayed for a couple of weeks.

EMAIL FROM DAN “I apologize it took me a couple of days to write back. It has been like a mad house around here. We are a little bit behind in our workshop schedule. We had a piece of equipment fail (our lathe that we use to create turned pieces like your table legs) and have not yet been able to replace it yet. We should have this remedied in the next couple of weeks, we're needing a specific new part, and then will be able to complete your pieces and have them out to deliver. I will be in touch letting you know more specifics as they become available to me.”  I never heard back from him until I then emailed him on March 15 to again check on status.

More than a month had past.  Finally 5 days later I get an email from Dan stating “I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. With recent growth and changes, Sam has taken over all of customer service. He is in our shop during the day so he takes care of that at night. I just spoke with him and he will be writing to you guys by tomorrow night. I just wanted to let you know :-).”

March 21 came & went & we never heard from Sam.  I promptly followed up with an email basically begging for a status update.

After this I had asked my husband to make an attempt to give you guys a call because by this point I was feeling bummed & frankly worried.  He called on Tuesday, April 2 and left voice messages on Dan’s phone.  You guys state to give 24 – 48 hours to respond.  My husband then called again on Friday, April 5 and left messages on Dan, Kelly, and the sales team voice mail boxes.  No one returned our calls.  He went ahead and followed up on the same day with an email.  His email was simply asking for an order update.  We again heard nothing.

I followed up on Monday, Apr 8 with an email…the context of the email.
 “Hi guys,
We've been trying to get an idea on a time frame for our furniture to be delivered.  I know my husband has called several times & has left messages on multiple voicemails.  This is after I have numerous times myself (this includes emails I've sent that have gone without a response for weeks at a time).

We've been pretty patient as far as this goes.  We paid for items on October 26 and I was clear that we'd be moving into the house in the middle of February.  That is a little over 3 months to get furniture completed.  We are now going on 5 months plus.

Honestly I am a bit worried now because the communication has pretty much ceased & the reviews I've started reading online & on BBB is to say the least concerning.  Listen I am trying to keep things nice because while we've gone through a lot over the last year, we also appreciate without saying what you guys are providing to us, but that does not in anyway excuse anyone from keeping us up to date, and to provide our furniture in a timely manner.  Had I known that it was going to take so long to receive the paid for items, I would have simply looked elsewhere.  I just felt at the time very confident...not so much anymore.

Our goal here is to keep things cordial.  I am asking as polite & nicely for a solution as soon as possible, if I do not receive a timely response I expect for this to be resolved by refunding our money.  I don't want to have to spread the word that the company that choose us as the July Farmhouse family hasn't followed through in an appropriate business manner.  I am sad & disappointed because I wanted nothing more than to see you be a big part of our story of a rebuilding success!”

Prior to this email being sent I had been reading reviews of what others had experienced is exactly what we have experienced.

Dan emailed me back that same day (Apr 8) to say this – “Hi Lynn,
I'm sorry for the delay getting back in touch. We were out of the office for the last five days. I have taken on some new projects, and as a result, I don't have enough time in my schedule to help manage building projects so Sam has taken over handling customer service. He works in the shop during the day and takes care of customer service questions and issues at night. I have asked him to get back in touch with you guys. He will be back in touch with an update by tomorrow night.”  The remainder of the email was defending you guys in what I was reading all over the internet. Plus don't you think if everyone is out of the office for 5 days voice messages on your phones should be changed not to say to give you 24 - 48 hours to respond, and an out of office reply for emails?  Otherwise I am expecting to hear back within 24 - 48 hours.

Apr. 9 came & went and we did not hear from Sam.
Apr. 10 I emailed stating we had no idea where we stood with our furniture order.  And, once again no response.
Apr. 12 I emailed – “I am reaching out to get a status on our request for our order to be canceled and to have our money refunded.

I am beyond myself trying to figure out what to do to receive some sort of communication from someone at Carolina Farmhouse.  I keep getting the same give us 24-48 hours or that Sam will be in touch with us only to receive nothing.

After going through the devastating fire, we've had to spend lots of our own money to replace & rebuild our lives.  We don't have the money to just be dishing out.  We need to move forward on getting a dining room table & an island specifically and because we paid you up front for items over 5 months ago we continue to have to wait to put this part of lives back.

I am asking kindly to refund our money as soon as possible.  This will be my last correspondence to ask for the refund as we can't wait any longer.  My biggest question is how would you feel if you put yourself in our situation?

Kind regards,

No one responded to my email.  At this point we felt that our only option was to pursue other avenues.  So, on Monday I filed a complaint with BBB as did many other people prior to me with basically the exact same issues.

I get a call from Dan on Tuesday once the BBB complaint is received by you guys.  That was the first phone call I have received from him since October prior to us placing our order.  The voice message also stated that with the growth spurt from last year & then scaling down from all difficulties you’ve had getting in touch right away.  And the time you guys spent with us on the customer service side & all the stuff that Rob did for us that you guys had to pay him for (he was your employee at that time...not sure if he still is) and that you could longer to do the Farmhouse Families for us.  Let’s clarify this…. Rob put together a cabinet estimate for us.  This by no means obligates us to buy cabinets from you.   Dan also stated you’d be happy to fulfill our order but it would take some time to figure when that would be done.

So if you have to figure out when our order would be filled, does this mean it was never started or now because we did file a complaint we go on the back burner?

I sent 2 separate emails – 1 on Tuesday evening after listening to the voice message and the other this morning asking for a status on our refund.   I finally after all this time get an email from Sam.
“Hi Lynn,

Dan asked me to get in touch with you regarding your order. We do our very best to let customers know on the front end about the lead time uncertainty associated with handcrafting furniture. We even go as far as making detailed notations and terms on our order summaries regarding our no return policy and lead time estimates. That said, if you truly feel that you cannot wait on your order to be completed, we will accept a chargeback from your credit card company as full and final refund, however we cannot provide a refund any other way at this time. I hope that you will reconsider as the final product is well worth the wait, but if not then good luck finding pieces to meet your family's needs.

Best,

Sam”

I replied asking what is the lead time?

Sam’s response -

“Hi Lynn,

Dan did not give a date range on your order summary from us but did detail the lead time uncertainty in the stated terms. I am attaching a copy of that here. We have all met and discussed your order. We are all very surprised about what you wrote in your official complaint to the BBB about having had no contact after Dan had sent you a detailed explanation via email on April 8th. At this point, we believe that a business relationship with you all is not in the best interest of either party. Please file a chargeback with your credit card company and we will accept that as a full and final refund. We are good people working hard to make beautiful products for our customers. We explain ahead of time that sometimes things can take longer than expected with handcrafting furniture. We also were very happy to include you guys in our Farmhouse Families program. We are just shocked, that out of all of our customers, you guys would publish a false statement about us as part of a permanent public record.

At the end of the day, we always wish our customers well and we hope you guys are able to find furniture to meet your needs. Best of luck in your future endeavors. Again, please file a chargeback with your credit card company and we will accept it as a full and final refund of your order.

Best,

Sam”

On this PDF it clearly states February 2013 completion.  Hey that’s doable…I have been contacting you guys since January asking for a status, not one time did anyone say when delivery could be EXCEPT in the email from Dan on February 9 stating that in a couple of weeks when the equipment would be working, that our order would be out for delivery.

You were contacted by us prior to publication of these blog posts and the filing of your BBB report, and your accounting of our business changes in your April 15 blog entry proves that fact because otherwise you would have had no other way of knowing some of the specific details you mention.  I think the above clarifies that communication was lacking. I am not sure of the accounting of your business changes in my April 15 blog would show that we were contacted by you.  I knew you were out of the office since Feb 25 working on outside projects due to the out of office email that was sent back to me when trying to contact you.  All of the other things listed are the excuses I was getting in the above emails I stated that I got from Dan each time I emailed asking about the status of our order.  You can see each time he responded there was always a reason/excuse as to the delay in him getting back to me.  And, each time we were contacted as stated in previous blog posts - our simple question "can you give us a status update as to when we can expect delivery" was never answered.  Not one email coming back to me has any estimated time frames, no one pick up the phone to call us to let us know what was going on...period...simple as that.

I know you've told us that our responses did not satisfy you because we could not provide a firm delivery date, but that is a very different situation that what you describe.  I didn’t say that your responses did not satisfy me because you couldn’t provide a firm delivery date.  We had an issue because we couldn’t get anyone to give us an answer as to a status on our furniture...had it been started, can you give us an estimated time, or do you have a status update....a far cry from "a firm delivery date"...in fact we never once asked for a firm delivery date.  Had you simply picked up the phone & communicated with us that there is a delay….things would have remained good.  I even said that in an email – that I was trying to keep things cordial & that we were just trying to get an idea of a time frame.
I too hope the karma gods are looking down on this situation.

There are multiple other inaccuracies-- no one who ordered after you received a table before you, Maybe I am mistaken…I see a post on CF Facebook that a client purchase the Gathering Together Table in November 2012…we purchased our items in October.  I was under the impression that is when our order went in.
o     Here is the post - ***** removing the name of client…My Gathering Together Table that I purchased from Carolina Farmhouse in November 2012! I Love It!  Carolina Farmhouse response - https://fbcdn-profile-a.akamaihd.net/hprofile-ak-ash4/s32x32/373204_116874711714967_1328171854_q.jpg
Carolina FarmhouseOh wow, ******, it looks gorgeous in your home! Thanks for sharing!
and I have not taken a position at another company. Sorry I was told by the officer that you had & he hoped that this would help with the business aspect of things.   I won't point out all of the inaccuracies as I don't find it productive to engage in a back and forth exchange in this type of forum,  Oh please do point them out.  I’d like to hear them.  but I do want to direct your readers to our published policies which explain our business model and the lead time uncertainty that goes along with building furniture from scratch. Please visit http://www.carolinafarmhouse.comand navigate to both the Purchasing and FAQ pages from the footer menu located at the bottom of the page. There you will find the following:

>>>>>When you place your order, we'd love to be able to tell you the exact date and time your furniture will be delivered to your home, but the truth is we can't. Instead, we try to provide you with a reasonable estimated date range of when your furniture will be ready for delivery. We base this estimate on the total amount of furniture already on order with us and the current rate at which we're delivering furniture each week. February 2013 that was given to us in October was fine with us, but the truth is that if it is delayed beyond we had a right as a customer to know that which we were never told.

>>>>>Our furniture is not factory made: additional time is required to build and finish each piece to meet the high standards expected of custom made furniture. The estimated completion date range is the approximate date range during which the order is expected. We will do everything we can to get your order in a timely manner, however, we do not rush the build and finish process. This assures that your furniture will be built with the highest possible craftsmanship available. When all is said and done, we hope you believe as we do that the trade off for lead-time uncertainty will be more than compensated for on the day your furniture arrives and for every day after that. Again February 2013 was a reasonable time frame – that was 16 weeks from when we placed & paid for the order.  But, now we are 6 – 8 weeks past that without being told.

Information about lead time uncertainty was provided to you at the time of your order both verbally Dan never said to me that it could take up to 6 months to get furniture out to us.  He only mentioned that you guys are a small family business & in fact I specifically asked him about lead time.  Back on May 10 I have an email directly from Dan stating that “One thing to know is that, due to our made to order model, our lead time from purchase to completion is normally ten to sixteen weeks”.  With that being said, 4 months at the longest which would put us in the February 26 date, and if there was a delay that we should’ve been told about in February – that would’ve given us the option under the FTC to either continue on or request for a prompt refund! Let me just point my readers to the website - http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0244-shopping-phone-or-mail
and in the terms on the invoice that you clicked through to submit payment. Which just tonight I realized that you can click onto the PDF tab and it says FEBRUARY 2013 completion date…we are 6 – 8 weeks past, which again under FTC being that you had gone past our completion date, we should’ve been given the option to move forward or have a prompt refund made to us.   You were also made aware that we are a very small family business and that customer service response times would not be like that of a large established company.  If response times are not going to be like that of a large established company, why are you giving those calling in a 24 - 48 hour response time?  And, not to mention your out of office reply that came back to us states "He will do his best to respond to all inquiries within 1-business day", this is speaking about Sam handling customer service. And, I do understand but prior to me paying for our order I spoke to Dan often either by phone or email...from June 23 until October 26 there were some days we spoke either via email or by phone multiple times in a day, some weeks 2 or 3 times, and then it stopped as soon as I paid.  So, customer service response times where pretty high.  I still have all of the emails.  Purchasing from us is more like commissioning a work of art than it is like the traditional furniture buying experience.

I'd like to also point out the large number of very happy customers we have. You may find a collection of testimonials on our website under the Say-So tab at the top of the page.  That is excellent & I am very happy for you guys & I also stated that I believe there are happy customers out there, but you also have a lot of unhappy customers on BBB - http://www.bbb.org/raleigh-durham/business-reviews/furniture-manufacturers/carolina-farmhouse-in-cary-nc-90208871
And, with speaking to the officer in your town many people from all over the US have contacted them trying to get help. Oh and not to mention all of the complaints that were posted on your Facebook page that you promptly deleted.  You have control over allowing who & what to say things...especially if they are negative.

All of that said, I wish you and your family nothing but the best in the future. I'm sorry that we were not able to meet your needs. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to respond here.  You are very welcome.

On a good note my friends…It is Friday tomorrow!  I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend.  I have lots coming your way.  I built our headboard for our bed & it is ready to make its appearance.  I also finished the curtains & space so I can show those off as well.  I did no sew curtains & it was super simple.

Update to "a big ole let down"....Carolina Farmhouse

We are working hard trying to recover the money we paid to Carolina Farmhouse.  I've emailed asking them kindly to refund our money.

We seriously do not care about getting a free table, we simply were more concerned about when we'd receive our paid for items.

So on Monday I had to end up filing a Better Business Bureau complaint.  Now for the last 5 plus months no one from Carolina Farmhouse has called us.  When I wasn't getting a response my husband attempted to call  & left voice messages on every phone available on several different days (no one picks up).

Of course Tuesday morning as soon as they received the BBB complaint they call me.  It took me filing a complaint to get them to call us.  I had missed the call because I was with my dad looking at mobility vans.  In all the times we've called or emailed our simple request was "can someone just give us a time frame on delivery?".

The message on the voicemail was basically telling us that we could charge back our credit card to get the refund...we didn't pay by credit card.  We paid via Paypal through our bank account because it was from the insurance money to replace items we lost in the fire.  Then the message was simply saying that sense we filed the complaint at BBB that they could no longer honor & make us Farmhouse Family (well...yeah we were counting on that after we asked for a refund).

I've attempted to ask for clarification on the refund....still no response.  I ended up calling the police department in their town.  The officer I spoke to said "yes ma'am I am quite familiar with this company".  They have had several people calling from all over the U.S. trying to get some help.  Thing is they are not doing anything fraudulent.  They are fulfilling orders.....just at a very extremely delayed time.  At this point don't you think the right thing to do is offer your customers the option of a refund?

The officer said that the owner herself admitted that they have just gotten in way over their heads.  She actually took on a role with another company to try to help her on the business aspect.    He also told me I should go through the Attorney General office & the Fair Trade Commission (FTC).  Gosh...really how sad is this?  This is not what I want to be dealing with right...I've had a full plate for almost a year now - enough already!

All we wanted was communication as to when we could expect our furniture....  We understand that sometimes things happen in life & you've had a growth spurt.  Hey listen I think that is awesome, but if you can't keep up with your orders you gotta make it right with the customer.  I think it'd be better to lose a few orders & grow your company than to get yourself in a situation that complaints are floating all around about your company...that's going to take much longer to dig yourself out of.

I think right now what stings is seeing on Facebook a lady placed an order for the exact dining table we were getting....in November...she received it in mid-February.  We paid for our items in October...it is now mid-May and they say that they provided us excellent customer service.  I think not. We were humbled by them wanting to give us the table but you can't use that against us now.  In fact it took them no time to take our picture & profile off their website...  According to them there is not enough hours in the day to give us a call or shoot us an email to give us a status update, but it took them no time to call after we were forced to file a complaint or no time to remove us from the website.  How do I stay not angry/upset about this situation?  I wish I knew....

I hope the karma gods are looking down on this whole situation.

I am sorry that I am bringing such a debbie downer to my blog, but I hope that this information helps someone else make a better decision than we did.  I will be providing updates only so that if someone else decides to pay with something than a credit card what actions can they take to recover their money!

On other news....I am busy planning a certain almost 3 year old birthday party.  Gosh how time flies...my baby is growing up :)

Hope everyone had a wonderful day!!

A big ole let down!

I’ve debated over the last couple of days on should or shouldn’t I write this blog.  But, the moment I started this blog was to write about our journey from a devastating fire.  And, so with that this is an unfortunate event that has happened as a result of the fire & now has become a part of the journey.

With positives in life there sometimes come negatives.  I try hard not to dwell on them, let them occupy space in my mind, or blog about them.

Ok…so now onto the dreadful part of the post.  I had written about us being chosen as July Farmhouse Family here - http://fernavenueblog.blogspot.com/2012/07/july-farmhouse-family.html

Needless to say we never became that family.  We have been trying since February just to get an idea of when our furniture would be delivered.  See not only have we been waiting on the table that Carolina Farmhouse was giving us, but we had paid for a custom island & a console table.  We had built our kitchen around the specs of the island.  We paid for our items back in October; I let them know in December & January that we would be moving in the 2ndweekend in February.

The business is a small business – Sam & Kelly Utt-Grubb (husband & wife owners), Dan Utt (Kelly’s brother).  Sam builds the furniture in their shop.  I believe they have a few others working to build furniture, but not sure of the production crew now.  Kelly was PR/Media and Dan was Operations Manager during the beginning of our communications (I am not sure of positions as of now).

My communication with Dan was several times a week up until we made our payment in full.  Then as I begin to ask about delivery many days, sometimes weeks would pass before getting some excuse of we were on vacation, a part broke & it will be a couple of weeks before it is in, we had a growth spurt creating a delay in production, we restructured business, Dan is no longer handling customer service Sam the owner is in the evenings after he is working in the shop during the day… We were told that Sam would get back to us on several different occasions…nothing.   Every excuse was given after I reached out to check on status.  Not one time did they call to let us know there’d be a delay.  I feel at some point as the customer I should’ve been given the option to cancel or to move forward with our order.  It is now over 5 months since we paid in full….and we are simply now stuck in limbo because Dan is no longer handling customer service, Sam doesn’t get back to us, and Kelly (Sam’s wife/co-owner) is now out of the office since Feb. 25 due to working on other projects outside of Carolina Farmhouse.  We’ve asked to have our order canceled & money refunded…  Guess what?  No communication back from any single one of them.

I probably sound a little bitter.  Well honestly I kinda am.  I guess it is because we feel hopeless & stuck.  I mean we’ve contacted each of the 3 family members that are owner/co-owner and Operations Manager with no communication back.  We don’t know how to go about getting an answer when no one will respond to our inquiries.

We’ve gone through enough since last June.  Our request of them was simple – just give us a time frame/status update.  We don’t even know if our furniture had been started nor do we know what color of stain the dining table or console table is because they never asked us.

Bitter… Sad & disappointed is more like it.  I wanted nothing more than to have them be a big part of our success story (because I think we came through this devastation stronger as a family).  I couldn’t wait to be showing off all of their design work in our house, and in fact was looking to purchasing a few more items in the future from them.  I believed in them & loved that they gave back in so many different ways.

Scary as it may seem to us…I started looking up reviews online & I became even more concerned!  There are always 2 sides to the story (well actually 3 – your side, their side & the middle or real side).  I understand that one person can spread negative reviews like wildfire with social media these days.

I am not one to say “don’t buy from them” because your experience could be different.  I know I’ve seen some great reviews of their products, and in all honesty I believe they make well-built beautiful furniture….I just can’t verify that with my own experience.  I don’t know where the breakdown happened, I only wish I knew.

I wish with all of my heart that this story I am writing about today was a positive, but it is not.  We simply want our money back so that we can move forward to purchase our island and our table to fit our family.

As of now we are working with a few places to get our money back.  It deeply saddens my heart that we have to pursue this avenue.  Anyone else out there order something custom & had to pay up front only to not receive your order or get something that was nothing like you ordered?  I’d love to hear experience because at this moment I feel pretty sick over this situation.
